There’s been a lot of talk out there in my newsfeed and business communities recently about PURPOSE.
People trying to find it. People trying to change it.
I’ve seen questions like:
Do you know your purpose?
Why don’t you know your purpose?
Is your purpose different to your why?
Do you know your why?
These are all great questions. Even greater for the people who believe they have found their purpose or who can explain in detail what it is. They get up every morning and show up, make a difference and enjoy their lives. If someone asks them what their purpose is, then they can concisely tell it like it is.
But what about the people who don’t know what their purpose is? What about those people?
I fear that there are so many amazing women who are showing up and doing amazing things who feel as though they’re missing something in their life, simply because they can’t articulate what their purpose is. Women who are feeling like there’s something wrong with them if they can’t pinpoint a specific goal or purpose right now. Women who are actually doing just fine in their lives but are suddenly believing that they’re not enough or not doing enough.
What about those women?
I fear terribly that we are creating a culture in the business world of fear-based anxiety around needing to label and articulate why we are doing what we are doing. Yes, it’s important to have a reason for why we do certain things in our lives. For example, the reason WHY we do the washing up is so that we can have a hygienic cooking and dining area and plenty of clean items to use. The reason WHY we provide lunches for our children is so that they can go to school to learn, concentrate, grow, receive good nutrition and not go hungry. The reason WHY we go on a holiday is to relax, chill out and enjoy ourselves.
But do we need to have an overarching definitive purpose?
No.
Purpose isn’t what is going to get you onto the right path for you. But do you know what will?
Action.
Taking action on the things that we enjoy and lighting us up.
Taking action when our curiosity awakens and our attention is diverted.
Taking action when we want to, not when we think we should.
Taking action towards our goals and dreams.
So if you want to live on purpose, just do this one thing.
Take action.
Show up every single day wherever you are, whatever you’re doing and whoever you’re with and be the best version of yourself every time.
And when you do this, you’ll be living your purpose automatically, without the stress, whether you can label it or not.
You don’t need to label your purpose.
You don’t need to define it. It doesn’t have a destination.
You don’t need it to exist in the forefront of your mind at every single moment of the day. Just live your life.
You should let your actions constantly evolve and change.
Just remember that purpose isn’t talking the talk.
Purpose is walking the walk.
Doing.
Taking action.
Purpose isn’t the destination, it’s the reflection and result of our actions.
So go and just get busy doing what you love. You ARE on purpose.
